Spawning at Henrys Lake

Yesterday I drove to Henrys Lake and met with Damon, the manager at the Henrys Lake Hatchery.  The run this year has been outstandingly consistent.  Damon has had 3837 cutthroats and 109 hybrids run into the hatchery.  He has collected over 3 million eggs and have made all of the hybrids.  The largest fish he has seen has been hybrids in the seven pound class.

Here is a picture of Damon and his grandson holding a large male hybrid.

Damon's goal is about 5 million eggs and he plans on spawning nine more times.  He says the lake looks very good for another good season, it the water is good.

Hi Bill - Thanks for the update on how things are coming along up at the hatchery. I hope to get a chance to get up there before Damon is finished.

Happy hook ups this season!

That's a lot of eggs. Fishing years ago with my sons in the 3rd meadow on Slough Creek YNP was the best cutthroat fishing I ever had. They are surely a gorgeous fish.

If the American fishery will allow it, some American Indians will bring some salmon eggs home to California from New Zealand.

How do you do it? I watch on TV only, they physically squeeze the salmon's tummy. Rough manhandling mid wife. I won't want that kind of treatment when I have babies. LOL

Bill, thanks for your interest in my post today. Quong Sin Tong was an early Chinese society that was active in Rookwood cemetery and the shrine became a monument to them. I have added some info on their work to my post and a better link to some historical info.

Wow, Bill, that's pretty impressive! I was pleased that you visited my blog, Down in the Hollow, and I thank you very much. Eagles excite me to no end, and even though I see them practically every day, I rejoice in each sighting as if it is my first time! ~ks

Bill, a goal of 5 million eggs is quite a large undertaking, good for Damon. My husband goes fishing every morning at the crack of dawn or earlier. It the only reason he finely retired.
